BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) is an aromatic organic compound and is a waxy white solid used as a preservative.

BHA protects food from lipid oxidation, which causes fats and oils to turn rancid. Oxygen reacts preferentially with BHA rather than oxidizing fats or oils, thereby protecting them from spoilage. In addition to being oxidizable, BHA and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) are fat-soluble. BHA is incompatible with ferric salts. BHA are used to preserve fats and oils in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
