Standards of the Skin Care Industry Location: Store Home > Why All Natural > Industry Standards What Standards are placed on the Skin Care Industry?
The European Union (EU) has prohibited the use of 1,100 chemicals that are known or suspected carcinogen, mutagens, or reproductive toxicants. Neither skin care products, cosmetics or their ingredients are reviewed by the FDA before they are sold to the public in the US. So far the FDA has banned only 9 chemical ingredients! The skin care products put on shelves in the United States are exposing human beings and the environment to thousands of synthetic chemicals. We need to support natural American made skin care products.
There are very little standards placed on manufactures of skin care products.
The lack of national standards is making it hard for consumers to make the right choices in purchasing a safe skin care product. Companies dedicate huge marketing budgets to promote the natural aspects of their products, but this still doesn't mean the product is safe.
Companies have their own in-house definition for words like botanical, natural, pure and organic. There is no national standard for these terms so these terms can mean different things from product to product. Manufactures will use more of an ingredient that is certified organic to justify the organic claim. The percentage on a product stating how organic it is only tells you that "some" of the ingredients are organic. What about the other ingredients? There could still be ingredients in that product that are harmful even though it states it is organic.
Don't just look at the Packaging!
Over the years skin care product's packaging has started to change and develop to convey fresher, more upscale appearances to make the skin care product appear as though it is "natural". Marketers have discovered that natural is appealing to most people and will pay more for "natural" skin care products.
Companies have also started dedicating huge marketing budgets to promote the "natural" aspects of their skin care products. A company may put a few drops of a diluted essential oil in their skin care product and label it "natural". This doesn't make your skin care product natural or safe. The companies want you to believe the skin care product is natural by designing the packaging to look as though it is natural. In some cases more money is spent on the marketing and packaging then the actual ingredients in the skin care product.
Manufacturers are banking on the fact that most consumers don't take the time to read the labels and educate themselves on what they are really putting on their skin. The skin care industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and the bottom line for most companies is profitability and appeasing their shareholders. The customer's long term health is not their top priority. It is our job as consumers to educate ourselves on safe and effective skin care products and not be fooled by this marketing scheme!
